Most of the top 20 prospects in the state of Ohio selected their college long ago. One of the few that hasn’t could end up at Michigan State.
Sunbury (Ohio) Big Walnut offensive lineman Skyler Schofner attended a Spartan game earlier this season, will be back for another at the end of the season and also plans to make an official visit to Michigan State.
Big Walnut lost on Friday night, which means the Eagles did not qualify for the Ohio state playoffs. Schofner and his teammates finished the season with a 7-3 record.
The 6-foot-7 and 280-pound Schofner played tackle on both sides of the line during his senior season. He is being recruited as an offensive tackle.
“Now that the season is over I’ll start figuring out recruiting,” Schofner said. “I’ll take it step-by-step.”
Schofner has plenty of options.
“I think I have about 22 (scholarship) offers,” he said.
Schofner has attended games this season at Michigan State, Ohio State and Kentucky.
When asked if he has begun to schedule his official visits, Schofner said, “No, but I know I want to visit Michigan State for sure. And Wisconsin, Kentucky and Purdue I think. But I know Michigan State for sure.”
Schofner is being recruited by MSU assistant Mike Tressel.
“Michigan State has great coaches, great people, it’s a real nice school,” Schofner said. “I’ll probably make my official visit there after their season.”
Schofner also plans to be in East Lansing the weekend of Nov. 21 when the Spartans host Penn State, but that will be an unofficial visit, at least as of this time.
Kurelic’s Comment: Schofner declined to name a favorite, but it seems safe to say the Spartans don’t trail anyone. He would be a great addition to Mark Dantonio’s 2010 recruiting class.
